Corgi

Writer's picture: Miss CrochetMiss Crochet

I'm not sure if this really ended up looking like a corgi, but it's cute none the less!

This pattern is a little bit more complicated, which makes it less beginner friendly, but not impossible for beginners. The body is made as one piece, and with the colour changes on top of that, you may need to count a lot. Stitch markers (you can use pieces of yarn in a contrasting colour as a stitch marker) are recommended.

If you are a beginner, you can also skip all the colour changes and make the dog just one colour instead.

This dog in the images is made with a needle size 3 mm and measures about 13 cm or 5 inches long (16 cm or 6 inches with the nose), and the same tall (15 cm or 6 inches with the ears).

Pattern

This dog is crocheted from the bottom up, and the pieces should therefore be made in order.

Legs

White and beige

Round 1: Chain 2 in white. Make 6 single crochet stitches (sc) in the second stitch from the needle [6]

Round 2: Increase (inc) 6 times [12]

Round 3: *4 sc, inc* 3 times [15]

Round 4-9: 15 sc [15] Change to beige for round 6, making the last 4 rounds beige.

End with a slip stitch (except for the last white leg).

Make two legs and weave in all the ends. Make two more legs completely white, but only weave in the ends for the first one. For the second white leg, you only want to weave in the end in the centre, and instead of finishing the leg with a slip stitch, you are going to continue with the body and attach all the legs.

Body

White and beige

Continue in white from the last white leg.

Round 1: 20 chain stitches (ch), 10 sc on one of the two-coloured legs (change to beige after the first sc), 2 ch, 10 sc on the other two-coloured leg, change back to white, 20 ch, 10 sc on last leg, 2 ch, 10 sc on the first leg [84]

Round 2: 20 sc in white, change to beige, 3 sc, *inc, 2 sc* 6 times, 1 sc, change to white, 23 sc, *inc, 2 sc* 6 times, 1 sc [96]

Make 13 more rounds of 96 sc with the following colour changes:

Round 3: 8 white, 52 beige, 36 white

Round 4: 2 white, 64 beige, 26 white, 4 beige

Round 5: 72 beige, 18 white, 6 beige

Round 6-7: 74 beige, 16 white, 6 beige

Round 8-12: 75 beige, 14 white, 7 beige

Round 13: 74 beige, 16 white, 6 beige

Round 14: 74 beige, 17 white, 5 beige

Round 15: 74 beige, 18 white, 4 beige

Now you will continue in "broken" rounds to make the back, in beige, leaving 22 stitches for the neck.

Round 16: 26 sc, *1 sc, decrease (dec)* 3 times, *dec, 1 sc* 3 times, 28 sc. Cut off the yarn and pull trough the loop.

Round 17: Pick up the yarn in the third beige stitch on the first side (2 stitches before the new round begins). 25 sc, *1 sc, dec* 3 times, *dec, 1 sc* 3 times, 25 sc. Cut off the yarn and pull trough the loop.

Round 18: Pick up the yarn for the new round. 25 sc, dec 6 times, 25 sc. Cut off the yarn and pull trough the loop.

Round 19: Pick up the yarn for the new round. 22 sc, dec 6 times, 22 sc. Cut off the yarn and pull trough the loop. Leave a long end for sewing the back.

Sew the back together from the inside.

Continue with the neck.

Round 1: Start at the back seam, 4 sc along one side of the back, 22 sc from the body, and then 4 sc more from the other side of the back [30]

Round 2: *3 sc, dec* 6 times [24]

Round 3-5: 24 sc [24]

End with a slip stitch and weave in all the ends. Including all the ends from colour changes on the inside of the body.

Belly

White

Start on either side of the belly, with the outside facing you. Pick up the yarn in the first of the 20 chain stitches (ch).

Row 1-2: 20 sc [20]

Row 3: 20 sc, 3 ch [23]

Row 4: 22 sc, 3 ch [25]

Row 5: 24 sc [24]

Row 6: 2 slip stitches, 22 sc [22]

Row 7: 2 slip stitches, 20 sc [20]

Row 8-9: 20 sc [20]

Leave end to attach belly to body, but you'll need more than one piece of yarn. Or weave in the end and use one very long strand of yarn to sew belly to body.

Head

Beige and white

To simplify reading the pattern, I've made one description for the shape of the head and one for the colours. If you've made round shapes before, you'll get enough information from the colour changes alone. If all of this is confusing, make the head beige instead, using the description for the shape.

Shape

Round 1: 2 ch, 6 sc in the second stitch from the needle [6]

Round 2: Inc 6 times [12]

Round 3: *1 sc, inc* 6 times [18]

Round 4: *2 sc, inc* 6 times [24]

Round 5: *3 sc, inc* 6 times [30]

Round 6: *4 sc, inc* 6 times [36]

Round 7-14: 36 sc [36]

Round 15: *4 sc, dec* 6 times [30]

Round 16: *3 sc, dec* 6 times [24] If you made the colour changes, add 1 extra sc in white, then end with a slip stitch. Leave end in to attach head to body.

Colours

Round 1: 6 beige [6]

Round 2: 4 beige, 2 white, 6 beige [12]

Round 3: 6 beige, 3 white, 9 beige [18]

Round 4: 8 beige, 4 white, 12 beige [24]

Round 5: 10 beige, 5 white, 15 beige [30]

Round 6: 12 beige, 5 white, 19 beige [36]

Rund 7: 13 beige, 3 white, 20 beige [36]

Round 8: 14 beige, 2 white, 20 beige [36]

Round 9: 14 beige, 3 white, 19 beige [36]

Round 10: 13 beige, 5 white, 18 beige [36]

Round 11: 12 beige, 7 white, 17 beige [36]

Round 12: 11 beige, 9 white, 16 beige [36]

Round 13: 10 beige, 11 white, 15 beige [36]

Round 14: 9 beige, 13 white, 11 beige, 2 white, 1 b [36]

Round 15: 7 beige, 13 white, 7 beige, 3 white [30]

Round 16: 1 white, 4 beige, 12 white, 4 beige, 3 white [24] (1 extra white sc, end with slip stitch and leave end for sewing head to body)

Nose

White

Round 1: Chain 2. Make 6 sc in the second stitch from the needle [6]

Round 2: Inc 6 times [12]

Round 3: *4 sc, inc* 3 times [15]

Round 4-6: 15 sc [15]

End with a slip stitch. Leave end to sew the nose to the head.

Ears

Beige

Round 1: Chain 2. Make 6 sc in the second stitch from the needle [6]

Round 2: Inc 6 times [12]

Round 3: *1 sc, inc* 6 times [18]

Round 4-9: 18 sc [18]

Round 10: *1 sc, dec* 6 times [12]

End with a slip stitch. Leave end to sew the nose to the head.

Assembly

Attach the belly if you haven't already. Add stuffing to the body. Start by adding smaller pieces to all the legs to make sure that they get enough stuffing, and then stuff the rest of the body.

Sew head to body. If you have the pattern on the head, make sure it's facing the way you want (to the front or the side). You can add most of the stuffing to the head before assembly, but the last of the stuffing is easier to add before you sew the last few stitches.

Sew on nose and ears. For the nose, it's easier to add the stuffing before sewing the last few stitches. No stuffing in the ears.

Lastly, embroider eyes, nose and mouth.
