This friendly ghost is a cute addition to your Halloween decorations, or simply cute on its own if you like ghosts. You can also make a bigger version for a cuddly toy.
Pattern
This ghost is easily adaptable to whatever size you want, but for the waves at the bottom, the number of stitches needs to be dividable by 4. Or if you want wider waves (by making 1 more round) increase the number of stitches between the chains from 4 to 6.
The ghost is made with crochet needle size 3 mm and measure about 8 cm/3 inches tall and 4 cm/1.5 inches wide (not including arms).
Body
Round 1: 2 chain stitches (ch), make 6 single crochet stitches (sc) in the second stitch from the needle [6]
Round 2: Increase (inc) 6 times [12]
Round 3: *1 sc, inc* 6 times [18]
Round 4: *2 sc, inc* 6 times [24]
Round 5: *3 sc, inc* 6 times [30]
Round 6: *4 sc, inc* 6 times [36]
Round 7-22: 36 sc [36]
Round 8: 2 sc, 6 ch, 5 sc along the chain**, 4 sc, 3 ch, 2 sc along ch, 4 sc, 7 ch, 6 sc along chain, 4 sc, 4 ch, 3 sc along chain, 4 sc, 5 ch, 4 sc along chain, 4 sc, 7 ch, 6 sc along chain, 4 sc, 4 ch, 3 sc along chain, 4 sc, 3 ch, 2 sc along chain, 4 sc, 5 ch, 4 sc along chain, 2 sc
** Always skip the stitch closest to the needle. For this pattern, you'll be using both sides of the chains and therefore only need to use one of the loops, which is easier.
Round 9: *1 sc, skip the next, 1 half double crochet (hdc) in the first stitch of the chain, 3 sc, inc 2 times, 3 sc, 1 hdc in the last stitch of the chain, skip the next stitch, 1 sc* 6 times, but change the number of stitches along the chain according to its length. There will be 1 hdc on either side of the base, and increases in both stitches at the top.
End with a slip stitch
Belly
For smaller ghosts, a belly (as in stuffing) may not be needed to help it keep its shape. Another option could also be to make a round ball with the same width of stitches as the body, lightly stuff it, and simply push into the "head" of the ghost.
Round 1: 2 ch, make 6 sc in the second stitch from the needle [6]
Round 2: Inc 6 times [12]
Round 3: *1 sc, inc* 6 times [18]
Round 4: *2 sc, inc* 6 times [24]
Round 5: *3 sc, inc* 6 times [30]
Round 6: *4 sc, inc* 6 times [36]
End with a slip stitch, but leave long tail to sew on belly to the ghost.
Arms
Round 1: 2 ch, make 6 sc in the second stitch from the needle [6]
Round 2: *1 sc, inc* 3 times [9]
Round 3-5: 9 sc [9]
End with slip stitch. Leave tail for sewing.
Make two.
Assembly
Add facial features with black yarn. Sew on arms.
Weave in all loose ends before sewing the belly to the inside of the ghost. Start at the centre back. Add stuffing before sewing the last stitches. Only add enough stuffing to help the ghost keep its shape. Adding to much stuffing will distort it, and make the seam for the belly very noticeable.
Tip!
To help you find where to attach the belly, sew a line of big stitches across the body with a contrasting colour. Start and end at the centre back. Sew on the belly along the line.
