This monkey rattle is a perfect gift for a baby, and the handle is small enough for the baby to hold on to. If you don't have a rattle insert, you can always make it as a soft toy instead.
Pattern
As always, the colours are just a suggestion. I used a 3 mm needle, and that made the handle about 7.5 cm or 3 inches long and the monkey is 4 cm or 1.5 inches.
Handle
Red and white
Start with 2 chain stitches in red. Make 6 single crochet stitches (sc) in the second chain stitch from the needle. [6]
Round 1: Increase 6 times [12]
Round 2-23: 12 sc [12]
End with a slip stitch. Keep enough yarn to attach the handle to the head.
The stripes are:
Round 1-5: Red
Round 6-7: White
Round 8-10: Red
Round 11: White
Round 12-13: Red
Round 14: White
Round 15-17: Red
Round 18-19: White
Round 20-23: Red
Tip!
You can always change the stripes, as well as the length of the handle to your taste.
Tip2!
Use the back of the crochet needle or a pen to add the stuffing to the handle. Gently fold the stuffing and push it down. Make the handle quite firm, or it will bend easily under the weight of the head.
Head
Red
Start with 2 chain stitches. Make 6 sc in the first chain stitch. [6]
Round 1: Increase 6 times [12]
Round 2: *1 sc, increase (inc)* 6 times [18]

Round 11: *2 sc, dec* 6 times [18]
Round 12: *1 sc, dec* 6 times [12]
Stuff the head. Add rattle insert if you want. Note! Depending on the size of the rattle insert, you may need to start stuffing the head after round 11, and then add the last stuffing after round 12.
Round 13: dec 6 times [6]
Finish with a slip stitch. Fasten loose end
Eyes
White
First eye
Start with 3 chain stitches.
Row 1: 1 sc in second chain stitch from the needle. Increase. Turn round to continue on the opposite side (same row). Increase, 1 sc. [6]
Finish and fasten loose end
Second eye
Start with 3 chain stitches.
Row 1: 1 sc in second chain stitch from the needle, increase (inc), continue on the opposite side (same row), inc, 1 sc. [6]
Row 2: 2 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc. Now continue with the second row on the first eye to attach them. Make sure they are facing the same way. 2 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc [16]
Keep enough yarn to sew the eyes to the head
Tip!
If you find the eyes a big difficult, either make 2 round eyes (use pattern for head, end after round 1 [12]) or just sew on black lines at the end.
Nose
White
Start with 6 chain stitches.
Round 1: 1 sc in second chain stitch from the needle, *increase (inc), 1 sc* 2 times, continue on opposite side, 1 sc, *inc, 1 sc* 2 times [14]
Round 2: 1 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 1 sc [18]
Round 3: 2 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 2 sc [22]
Round 4: 22 sc [22]
End with a slip stitch. Keep yarn to attach to head
Ears
White
Start with 2 chain stitches. Make 5 sc in the second chain stitch from the needle [5]
Keep enough yarn to attach the ear.
Make two
Final steps
Attach the handle to the head. Sew on the eyes, place them about halfway down the head.
Next, sew on the nose, and attach the upper part of the nose to the eyes to prevent red from showing through. Add stuffing to the nose before sewing the last stitches.
Add the ears, and lastly add details on the nose and eyes in black.
And your adorable rattle is done!
